Starting The Play

Taking Turns

The next player in the circle must then think of a new word that starts with the last letter of the previous word. For example, if the first word was “cat”, the next player could say “tree” because it starts with ‘t’ and continue the game with each player contributing a word that links to the end of the previous one. 

Going Out

The game usually ends when players are unable to think of a new word or when the specific limit (like time or words) is reached. Some variations of the game, like the one described in which players are out if they can’t think of a word within a certain time limit, do have players “going out.”

Winning

In the regular game with no elimination, nobody wins. The win is in the group effort to build a long and interesting word chain. When players cannot think of a word, the last player to think of a word is selected as a winner.

  • Cooperative Word Chain: This variation focuses on making logical connections between words in any way (synonyms, related concepts, etc.) instead than just the last letter.
  • Word Ladder/Word Golf: This games involve progressively changing one word into another by altering one letter at a time.
  • Shiritori (Japanese): Players use the last mora (kana) of a word to start the next, with a rule against words ending in ‘n’.
  • Antakshari (Indian):Players chain verses of songs based on the last letter of the previous word.
