The UNO Card Game (UNO Rules, Cards, How To Play UNO)

UNO card game is a classic game consisting of 112 unique cards of number cards from 0 to 9 in 4 colors plus special action cards like the wild, skip, reverse, Draw 2 and draw 4 cards and some additional cards used in some Uno variations like blank cards, shuffle hands and swap hands.

There are many variations of uno, nearly 700 different variations with different theme cards and house rules but the basic rules for each variation are the same, you match the top card by color, number or the rules based on that card and the first player to match all the cards is the winner.

Uno is a card matching game where the objective of UNO is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards and you achieve this by strategically matching cards with the color, number, or symbol of the top card on the discard pile. Alternatively, the winner of the game is the first player to score 500 points.

To set up the game, Decide the dealer player to shuffle all 112 cards and ensure a random arrangement of cards. Now, the dealer distributes seven cards to each player, one at a time, face-down and places the remaining cards face down on the table in centre to form the draw pile.

Now, flip the top card of the draw pile and place it face up beside the draw pile to be the first card of the discard pile, matches the color, number, or symbol of the card.

How to Play UNO Card Game

To start the turn, the player sitting next to the left of the dealer goes first, and the play proceeds next clockwise. The players match cards and play them until one player gets to ride all his cards and the round ends.

On each player’s turn, players must play a card that matches the top card’s color, number, or symbol from the remaining face-down cards in the discard pile. For example, if the top card is a blue 3, you can play any blue card or any card with the number 3 on it.

To play a card, Players place the card face-up on top of the discard pile to ensure that all players can see it. In case, any player doesn’t have a playable or matching card, they must draw a card from the draw pile and if the drawn card is playable, you can play it immediately; otherwise, your turn ends.

The special action cards in uno like Draw Two, Reverse, and Skip affect the next player as described in the original uno rules.

Wild Cards

The wild card can be played at any time and allows the current player to choose the next card’s color. The next player must then match that colour. When players play a wild card, they can choose the color that the next player has to match. This can help you get rid of other cards in your hand.

Skip Cards

When players play a skip card the next player turns misses and they cannot draw and play a card. The skip card skips the next player’s turn and if any player has two or more skip cards, they may play them to skip multiple player turns.

Reverse Cards

The reverse card is used to reverse the direction of play and the game goes in reverse direction. If play is currently going clockwise, it now goes counterclockwise, and vice versa. This card can shift the flow of the game and make players shift the way of play the game.

Draw Two +2 Card

The Draw two card uses the symbol +2, which makes players draw two cards from the draw pile instead of taking their turn. When a +2 card is played, the next player in line must draw two cards and their turn ends. This card allows you to give your opponents extra cards and gives you the advantage of getting rid of cards first.

Draw Four +4 Card

Draw Four is like a Draw 2 card, the next player takes four cards instead of playing a card and misses their turn. The wild draw four card allows the player to choose the color and forces the next player to draw four cards and can only be played if the player has no other card that matches the color or number of the card in the centre of the table.

Going Out

In UNO, when players leave only one card in their hands they must Yell UNO! Loudly to tell other players, he is playing his last card and in case any player forgets to call UNO and plays his turn they will get a penalty and draw two cards from the draw pile.

UNO Winning

The first player to play all their cards and shout UNO loudly first wins the round. After a player goes out, the round ends, collect all other players’ cards to count the points of cards in their hands. The points are counted as:

• The Number Cards: Face value (0 to 9) of each card.
• The Special Cards (Skip, Reverse, Draw Two): 20 points for each card.
• The Wild Cards (Wild, Wild Draw Four): 50 points for each card.
